"My father was in the government. I have a brother and a sister. Since my father was almost always travelling, and I am the eldest sibling, managing money at home was mostly the work I took up. My mother would take care of the household, while I would run the smaller errands for my house. Thus the concept of financial independence was one that came to me rather naturally.”
“Years later, when I got married and started earning though my husband used to manage the investments practically, he always made sure that I was informed, consulted and a part of the conversation. To a large extent, I had the theoretical knowledge, but maybe lacked practically investing.”
“The major turn of events happened when I lost my husband 3 years ago. Everything fell into my hands. But since I had all this knowledge and knew how to take care of my money, I was able to gather everything and step up to take charge of the family. This was when I actively became the only person taking all the decisions about my money.”
“It is surprising to see how irrespective of how important financial independence is, many women, young women I know, still shy away from this conversation. I have noticed this irrespective of social strata, education background and so many other factors.”
“I have brought up my daughter to become aware of this. She should know to manage her money. She is 19 years old and I have told her that by the time she turns 20, she must start looking into investing; even a little bit is a start. She has become a lot more aware today. In fact, her college had this scholarship where they would waive off 25% of the fees of the students who won. She won it and was telling me about how she saved us that 25%. This is a great start for me. It means that she is getting a lot more aware of the importance of saving, and making those decisions on her own.”
“I am training her as my husband trained me about money, so that tomorrow, she doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. She can take care of herself; that is what true independence ultimately is!”
